We decided to pop into Kevin Rathbun Steak on Saturday for dinner without reservations. I love Rathbun Steak but have found most of the staff to be too darn serious and arrogant. We started with a glass of wine at the bar while we waited for a table because they couldn’t take us until after 8:30 p.m. inside but we had an option to be seated outdoors. Rathbun’s replaced most of their outdoor Beltline Lounge furniture with dining tables on such a beautiful Saturday evening. To our delight being seated outdoors was a transformation of the serious Kevin Rathbun ‘Stedford’ staff we had encountered inside. Our waiter, Michael, was charming, happy, delightful, and attentive and had great food and wine recommendations as well. Our table outdoors was quiet and intimate under an optional heat lamp, had wonderful jazz music playing, and a gray neighborhood cat wondering around. We started with a big bold cabernet, Conn Creek Limited Edition, Napa, Ca. Then Tim had the last of the season Caprese salad with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese topped with balsamic vinegar. We both enjoyed filet mignon (mine with béarnaise sauce) and then we split the jalapeno creamed corn and scalloped sweet potatoes. Then we finished the evening with the black bottom crème brulee.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Kevin Rathbun Steak atmosphere and décor inside but it was a wonderful surprise not to be seated inside and to have an alternative space continuum experience under the stars.
