TOP FLR

I first learned about TOP FLR when I saw them featured in the October 2008 issue of Bon Appétit magazine as the #3 in their The Hot 10: Raising the Wine Bar story.

TOP FLR is an eclectic step above for late nighters to food and wine connoisseurs. It isn’t in a cute little house or in a sophisticated high-rise condominium lobby location but is nestled into a charmer old two-story building in Midtown Atlanta off the corner of Myrtle Street and Ponce De Leon Avenue (across the side street from Mary Mac’s). You can dine on either the first or second level of the restaurant but I preferred to eat this one night at the bar with a friend. Their menu was a bit of a farm-to-table meets Asian-flair concept. We chose to dine on just appetizers on this evening and we were impressed with everything we tried. The eclectic culinary choices we ordered included mussels in coconut milk and soy broth; pork skewers with cucumbers daikon salad and spicy Thai sauce; duck confit, applewood bacon, grilled portobello mushroom and pesto pizza; and tuna tartar with sardinian flat bread with Thai miso pesto, avocado, and lime aioli.

As the menu moves beyond appetizers and pizzas, entree selections include pan-roasted chicken, crispy duck, oven-roasted salmon, scallops, beef entrees, and more. They also have the hard to choose from salads, sides, and desserts. Those with a chocolate sweet tooth should try the chocolate espresso cake with pistachio ice cream in a red wine reduction.

About the wines … they have large, varied selection for a small restaurant. We trusted the staff to recommend wine pairings with our selections that were very complementary to our dishes. Bon Appétit explained it in their wine story as “… smartly chosen [wine] list changes weekly and always includes interesting varietals from small-production wineries.”
