Sweet Georgia peaches are in season so let’s support the last four commercial peach growers in our state by buying and enjoying Georgia peaches while the Georgia peaches are in season. These four growers (Dickey Farms, in Musella, Ga., Lane Southern Orchards and Pearson Farm, both located in Ft. Valley, Ga., and Taylor Orchards in Reynolds, Ga.) form the Georgia Peach Council which launched a brand new Web site this month that includes history of the Georgia peach, peach recipes, and upcoming peach events. The site includes interesting Georgia peach facts i.e. a medium-sized peach is only 38 calories which is fewer than a comparable apple or pear.
One of Atlanta’s biggest upcoming events is the Fourth of July Peachtree Road Race, 10K which starts at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 4. This year celebrates the 40th anniversary of the race which attracts 55,000 runners and even more fans. And for the first time ever the Georgia Peach Council is a Peachtree Road Race sponsor. So by working with Publix they will give out a fresh Georgia peach to every Peachtree Road Race participant (that’s 55,000 peaches). How peachy is that! The Council will also have their “biggest” peach fan onsite—their peach mascot who is actually, in real life, 7-feet 2-inches tall—at the finishing line greeting participants. So enjoy running the Road Race and don’t miss seeing or receiving your Georgia peach.
Check out all their peach recipes including one for an easy Georgia Peach Cobbler and learn more about each of our Georgia Peach growers at www.gapeaches.org.
