One of the best places to find a lot of unique home décor items is Scott Antique Market. All year, the second weekend of every month (this weekend), the Scott Antique Market comes to the Atlanta Expo Centers. Scott Antique Market is filled with thousands of exhibitors offering the finest selection of antiques and collectibles in two enormous (air-conditioned) buildings total 366,000 sq. ft. of exhibit area overflowing into large outdoor exhibits. This antique show is a treasure hunter’s paradise. You can find a huge selection of antique furniture, pottery, glassware, artwork, and so much more. Atlanta Expo Centers are located one mile east off I-75 on I-285 at Exit 55 (Jonesboro Rd.) just three miles from Atlanta International Airport. The Atlanta Expo Centers split I-285, so a right or left turn off of the exit ramp onto Jonesboro Road will get you to the north and south center. The admission is $5 per person for the entire weekend (a $1.00 off coupon available online). Hours: Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Most vendors accept cash, checks and/or credit cards. Plan on wearing very comfortable shoes. For fun I’ll document some fun finds for your home in another posting.

Business Woman: Leslie Grant, President and “Mother Hen”

Description of Business: Leslie Grant wanted a better way to keep up with what her children were eating (or not eating) every day. She took one of the most basic food nutrition guides out there—the “food guide pyramid”— and broke it down into component parts. Then she creatively designed a chart (not anything like those awful food pyramid charts) that could be placed on the refrigerator. Leslie knew it had to be functional, educational, and fun for children. She put it to work on her home fridge where the entire family could see it every time they made a choice about what to eat and voilá, the Chickin Feed Nutrition Tracking Board was hatched in 2007. The Chickin Feed Nutrition Tracking Board works by providing two identical food columns with movable magnetic chicks. Children are involved in tracking their food choices by determining What They Need to eat and then they move their chicks to What They’ve Had to eat column. It becomes a very effective “game” for moms and children. The Chickin Feed Nutritional Tracking Board comes in a variety of colors (to match your kitchen) and costs about $30.00. Other accessories and line extensions items available.

Wendy’s personal note: I don’t have children but was so impressed with Leslie and the chart when I first learned about it that I purchased one for my sister who has a four-year-old daughter who’s a finicky eater. I’ve always been impressed with the fact that someone can take a basic idea (in this case the food guide pyramid) and make it better, easier, educational, and fun.

Aug. 5, 2009: 12:30 pm – NOTE to readers: I just learned from contacting the Ritz-Carlton, when the hyperlink below quit working, that they had a fire last night and the entire restaurant was completely destroyed. There’s an investigation underway at this time.

I had the opportunity recently to finally dine at one of the restaurants at the Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia. We dined at the Linger Longer located in The Oconee Clubhouse of the Ritz-Carlton Lodge. Not knowing anything about the restaurant when I made reservations I asked the reservationist to recommend where we should request to dine within the restaurant. She suggested and requested the chef’s table—with no guarantee that we’d get it. But we did and it was fabulous. It’s in the main dining room (vs. the bar dining room) and is located nearest the open chef’s kitchen. We had an excellent waiter, exceptional wine, and a visit from the chef during the final course of our dinner. I started with the half dozen water oysters Rockefeller and then had the 6 oz. Black Angus filet mignon with the creamy gorgonzola mac n’ cheese (okay I really splurged on the mac n’ cheese). There are plenty of incredible salads as a possible second-course selection…but our two courses plus wine and a plate of complementary chocolate varieties for dessert (to share) topped off our cravings for anything else. So the entire dinner was perfect and we had plenty of time to linger longer. Enjoy it with friends which is exactly what we did. Check it out at Linger Longer, Ritz-Carlton Lodge.

Last year, The Home Depot launched a consumer compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb recycling program at all 1,973 The Home Depot locations. This free service is the first such offering made so widely available by a retailer in the United States and offers customers additional options for making environmentally conscious decisions from purchase to disposal.

At each The Home Depot store, customers can simply bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs, and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk (and I’ve personally seen collection boxes in the exit vestibule of my local The Home Depot). The bulbs will then be managed responsibly by an environmental management company who will coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance.

For more information on their CFL Recycling Program or Eco Options, visit www.homedepot.com/ecooptions.

Why is it important to recycle CFLs or other fluorescent light bulbs?

CFLs or other fluorescent light bulbs thrown into the trash are usually sent to a landfill or incinerated. These disposal methods will lead to releases of elemental mercury into the environment through breakage and leakage. There is also the potential for exposure to mercury from broken fluorescent light bulbs thrown in a dumpster, trash compactor, or trash can. Approximately 670 million fluorescent light bulbs are discarded each year in the United States. These discarded bulbs can release approximately 2 to 4 tons of mercury per year into the environment. Once in the environment, mercury can be converted to an organic form that accumulates in living organisms and contaminates the food chain. To prevent the release of mercury, the fluorescent light bulbs should be taken to a recycler before they break. Recyclers can recover the mercury and other components for reuse. – Source: www.epa.gov.

If you’re entertaining this weekend and need an easy dessert…I’ve got a real easy one for you. If I’ve cooked several courses for a dinner party and just don’t have the time to make a homemade dessert (or I don’t want to serve a store brought dessert) I’ll serve dark chocolate almonds. Present on a pretty colorful flat serving plate and the dark chocolate just pops off the plate (I mean they’ll be popping off the plate into your friends’ mouth). With everyone trying to eat healthier they don’t want the desserts (or they really do want the desserts but don’t want to admit it). This satisfies the dessert craving without too much guilt. Hey, it’s almonds and dark chocolate. Serve with a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon or dessert wine and you’re sure to be a hit. I recommend the dark chocolate almonds from The Fresh Market in their bulk section. One pound package is $6.99.

The key to staying fit is, of course, to exercise and to eat right. And the easiest way in my opinion to help you stay fit is to buy and use a heart rate watch monitor when you’re exercising. My personal trainer advises exercising two hours a week (cumulatively) in your heart rate zone. That means that you’d need to exercise more than two hours a week in order to accrue two hours in your zone because depending on how fit you are it will take time to get into your zone. You heart rate watch will keep a daily journal so you can simply add up your time over a course of the week to see if you’re on target. If your time is under as you approach the end of the week than get out there more times. If you’re over then enjoy the fact that you’re over and perhaps enjoy a low-impact walk just for fun. I’d recommend the Polar heart rate watches. You can purchase at local sporting goods stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Sports Authority or at www.polarusa.com. If you’re just starting out then you can expect to spend around $129.00 for a basic model like the RS100 (which is designed for runners). They can go as high as $500. The watches are fairly easy to program and use. Try keeping an exercise log on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis in a notebook or Excel spreadsheet to keep up with tallying your time. Don’t get discouraged. If you’re just starting out try to do two hours of low impact a week until you can gradually move into higher-impact workouts. Also try mixing up your exercise routine with running, swimming, biking, cardio workouts, etc. Polar designs all types of watches for all types of athletics (hence why certain models are so expensive). Most watches are water resistant which makes them great for swimming and other water-sports activities.

For any of my friends that have been in my kitchen and used my chef knives know that I like to keep them sharp. Some of my friends have even cut themselves on my sharp knives (sorry Kate). When my dad isn’t here to sharpen them then next best thing is to have them professionally sharpened. The Cook’s Warehouse offers professional knife sharpening services at affordable prices (ranging from $4.50 to $6.00 each depending on the length and type of kitchen knife). Drop your knives off the day before for the next day’s service. The Cook’s Warehouse on-site service days: Brookhaven: Fridays; Decatur: Wednesdays; Midtown: Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’ve personally used the service and was very pleased. William-Sonoma offers the same type service but at a more expensive per knife rate. Contact The Cook’s Warehouse store nearest you for more information: http://www.cookswarehouse.com/.

My new favorite restaurant in Atlanta is Dogwood Restaurant. Start the evening by grabbing a seat at the bar which faces Peachtree Street or one of several cocktail-height tables or better yet, get cozy at one of cushy sofa seating areas in the bar. Restaurateurs Chef Shane Touhy (formerly Executive Chef at Blue Ridge Grill) and Scott Black (formerly Bone’s) now maitre d’ and co-owner know southern cuisine and the Atlanta restaurant scene. Black also knows wines and Dogwood has a nice wine selection. The regional cuisine is still southern but with a contemporary gourmet twist. I love the grit appetizer selections. On Saturday I had the Zinfandel Braised Short Rib over grits as an appetizer and Potato Crusted Halibut, Sweet Corn Pudding, Sauce Gribiche as an entree. The executive chef is a cutie too so you get a great meal and eye candy. Ask for Doc at the bar…he’s the best.

Dogwood Restuarant, 565 Peachtree St., Atlanta 404.835.1410. Dinner: Tuesday – Friday 5:30 p.m. – 10:00 pm and Saturday 5:30 p.m. -11:00 p.m.

POST NOTE: 6-17-2011 – We were so sad to receive an e-mail from our friends at Dogwood Restaurant letting us know that they’ve closed. We so enjoyed the many times we dined there and wish Chef Shane Touch, Scott Black and the entire team continued success in their future endeavours.
