Well, it seems fitting with everything going on in our nation today that we need to take time to try to convince Congress that we need a national holiday to celebrate Jack Daniel’s birthday. (Hey guys, I don’t make this stuff up.) Since this month marks the 160thcelebration of Jack Daniel’s birthday, Jack Daniel’s is asking its friends and supporters (ages 21 and up) from Florida to Washington state, California to Maine, beginning September 1st to sign the petition calling on Congress to establish a national holiday in honor of his birthday. The Jack Daniel Distillery is the oldest registered distillery in the United States and is proudly based in the South in Lynchburg, Tenn. The maker of the world-famous Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey and other Jack Daniel’s products is fully aware that there are many serious things going on in our country today, but thought they’d have a little fun with this long-shot request.

Famed distillery founder Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel was born in September 1850.

Supporters can sign up at JDBDay.com; via Facebook and text message; at bars and other locations; and, in select cities, at the Jack Daniel’s campaign bus. At the end of the month, petitions will be delivered to Washington, D.C. and the rest will be up to our political leaders. Since the folks at Jack Daniel’s don’t know the exact date of his birth in September, they’ll ask Congress for whatever day Congress chooses in September. Who knows, perhaps it will be the Tuesday after Labor Day (like today) and we’ll have an annual four-day holiday weekend.

I thought I’d share my Atlanta favorites, especially if you have out-of-town guests visiting this weekend. But even if you don’t, save these recommendations for when you do or just go enjoy the city this holiday weekend with no guests in tow.

Georgia Aquarium jellyfish

For sightseeing: the Georgia Aquarium. It’s perfect for kids and adults. Everyone is amazed by everything the aquarium has to offer.

For cocktails: The St. Regis. It’s absolutely beautiful and The Wine Room and The St. Regis Bar offer two distinctively different atmospheres. It might even be nice enough to sit outside and enjoy the patio this weekend.

For shopping: Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. You can’t bet this shopping combo, especially if your guests are coming from a small town.

For breakfast: OK Café. It’s an Atlanta landmark and they serve brunch on Saturday and Sunday until 2:00 p.m., so even if you were out late the night before you can still count on a choice of a late breakfast or lunch.

Watershed Restaurant

For lunch: Watershed. It has a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, plus the Southern food is sure to please any out-of-town guest, no matter where they’re from.

For dinner: this depends. Casual and inexpensive: Six Feet Under Atlanta, 11th Street location, has a great bar food and one of the more impressive views of midtown, downtown, and Kennesaw Mountain. Moderately priced/neighborhood restaurant/gourmet: Serpas, Shaun’s or Miller Union. More expensive/gourmet: Dogwood Restaurant.

For the sports fan: the Atlanta Braves at the Braves Stadium. Unfortunately, the Braves are on the road this weekend and returning to their home game schedule Thursday, September 9 – Wednesday, September 15.

Cowboy Mouth

For music: from Jazz to Southern Rock. Glenn Gordon’s jazzy blues at the Aquarium’s Jazz Journey to Cowboy Mouth’s Southern Rock at Park Tavern in Piedmont Park, both on Friday, September 3.

Our state and golf fans alike are thrilled that the PGA TOUR is coming to the Golden Isles of Georgia with the inaugural McGladrey Classic, October 4-10, 2010, being played on the legendary Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons. The McGladrey Classic is new to the PGA TOUR Fall Series and it’s certainly expected to be an intimate and spectator-friendly event that will showcase this gorgeous coastal golf course and community.

Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Course

The Davis Love Foundation is proud to be the host organization with proceeds from the tournament benefiting Special Olympics and local children and family charities—the Boys and Girls Club and Safe Harbor. Volunteers are essential to the operations and success of the McGladrey Classic, and the organization has provided a comprehensive Web site on its volunteer needs and benefits. It’s looking to solidify all its volunteers by next week, so if you’re interested click McGladrey Classic Volunteers for more information.

Daily and weekly ticket packages may be purchased online at www.mcgladreyclassic.com. Tickets are limited and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis to spectators. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early to ensure availability.

Stay tune for more information on With a Southern Twist about visiting the area as it gets closer to the actual event.
