Southern Italy especially Naples is famous for their pizzerias and their pizzas made with fresh ingredients, then cooked and served quickly. And the final results are delicious. Now Atlanta has its own slice of Southern Italy, literally, with the arrival of Pizza Antico Napoletana.

Naples is the Italian birthplace of pizza especially the Margherita pizza named for Queen Margherita in 1889. The traditional Margherita is made with luscious tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala (mozzarella made from the milk of the domestic water buffalo), vibrantly aromatic basil and garlic. At Pizza Antico the Margherita pizza and their chefs are so authentic I thought for a second that I was in Italy and not just off the Georgia Tech campus and Northside Drive. Their Italian pizzas are made to order and bake—in one of three authentic handmade and shipped from Naples, wood-burning pizza ovens—in about 90 seconds and then devoured just as quickly. Eat in or take away but I’d recommend eating it there while it’s hot and delicious. Limited seating in and off their actual kitchen.

We ordered and sampled the Margherita and the Margherita with pepperoni and I’ve never enjoyed a more delicious and authenitic pepperoni pizza in my life (but I’ve never been to Italy). They offer six traditional pizzas, three specialitá pizzas, and three calzoni. The Margherita is the only pizza that offers add-ons of salsiccia (sausage), pepperoni , and/or solo bufala (extra cheese). Delicious Italian pasticceria (pastry shop) to tempt the sweet tooth including homemade cannoli and sfogliaelle made fresh daily.

1093 Hemphill Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia, 404-724-2333. Just south of Northside Drive and 14th Street. Hours: Monday – Saturday 11:30 a.m. ‘until out of dough.’ Eat in or take out. No phone-in orders because it’s make hot while you wait. Limited parking. http://www.anticopizza.it  (Even their Web site is from Italy).

Post Note:

Watch CNN video on nine-year-old Johnny Di Palma who’s been making pizza since the age of four. Pizza prodigy tosses pies, Monday, February 15, 2010.
