Mom always says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why not start the year with my favorite breakfast places in Atlanta? Some of these might be oldies but goodies for most of my readers but they are always worth mentioning again.
Murphy’s is located in the heart of Virginia Highland and although they are open every day they only serve brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy gourmet created dishes including Georgia white shrimp and grits, egg’s Virginia Highland (spinach, mushrooms, poached eggs on focaccia with sundried tomato hollandaise) plus a variety of frittata, sandwiches and salads. Brunch at Murphy’s would not be complete without a Murphy’s homemade Bloody Mary or berry or peach mimosa. Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. 997 Virginia Avenue NE, Atlanta, 404.872.0904. www.murphysvh.com
OK Cafe is an Atlanta institution for Southern home cookin’ which is served all day but breakfast is served every day until 11:00 a.m. These are the breakfasts that make you proud to be a Southerner. It’s one of the few places in town where you can have a classic Southern breakfast or a cheeseburger with French fries (the breakfast of champions). Great place for a power breakfast meeting. Hours are 7:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m. Sunday – Thursday and 7:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Brunch 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 1284 West Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta, 404.233.2888. www.okcafe.com
The Social House
This restaurant is located in a charming and cozy little house on Howell Mill Road which you could easily drive passed but one you shouldn’t miss. Their breakfasts are as warm and inviting as their interior which feels like a comfortable Southern bed and breakfast with perhaps Ella Fitzgerald songs in the background. Breakfast items range from apple stack pancakes, cinnamon raisin French toast, a variety of omelettes to brunch items like country fried steak, biscuits and eggs. Monday – Friday 7 a.m.-3p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. 1663 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, 404.350.1938.
POST NOTE: Closed, as of August 2011.
This artsy and urban breakfast spot in the West end adjacent to the new White Provision loft building is where you can have breakfast all day. Choose from a classic blue plate breakfast with option for ham, turkey sausage or vegetarian sausage to Georgia Benedict with turkey sausage patties, eggs and turkey sausage gravy over biscuits, black beans cakes and eggs to pimento cheese & bacon omelet plus a variety of sandwiches and creative sides. Great coffees and check out their bakery cupcakes including their Coca-Cola cupcake. West Egg Cafe open seven days a week: Monday – Friday 7 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. 1100 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, 404.872.3973. www.westeggcafe.com
