As thousands of Big Green Egg enthusiasts swarm toward the aroma of roasting, grilling, smoking and baking at the 13th annual EGGtoberfest scheduled Friday and Saturday, October 15-16, at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., I asked another Big Green Egg fan (my uncle Jerry) to share his ‘EGGsperiences.’ Learn more about the Big Green Egg and EGGtoberfest at www.biggreenegg.com.

"Meats that are cooked in the V-rack, and not on the direct heat, are smoked which achieves a wonderful smoky flavor for butt roast, beef, chicken, turkey and ribs." - Jerry R., Big Green Egg owner, Foley, Ala.
The Big Green Egg is the best smoker and grill made. This is the company’s tagline but it’s the true. The EGG uses natural coals (not charcoal), so we are smoking or grilling with wood. We use hickory or pecan depending on the flavor we are after. The Big Green Egg holds a consistent temperature, so once the ceramic is heated it stays at the desired temperature. We use a pan and V-rack (an additional BGE accessory) to cook all meats except steaks, burgers and hot dogs which cook directly on the grill. Meats that are cooked in the V-rack, and not on the direct heat, are smoked which achieves a wonderful smoky flavor for butt roast, beef, chicken, turkey and ribs. The pan also catches the extra smoky juices which can be used for gravies or au jus. The next best thing is that it comes with a lifetime warranty except for breakage (which is hard to do). We had the firebox crack from heat and it was covered. We just sent them the old one and they sent a new one. We’ve had the Big Green Egg for 10 years sitting outside with no cover and through all the weather it still looks brand new. We have never owned a grill that lasted more than a year. We use it three to four times a week and use 20 lbs. of natural coal which lasts about four months. Considering the overall expense, this is the best investment for the men who grill.—Jerry R., Foley, Ala.
