Eating local means eating seasonal. Now that we’re in the month of May we have lots of yummy fruits and vegetables that have just hit the harvest calendar for first time in the 2012 season. What’s a harvest calendar you ask? According to the Georgia Organics, “a harvest calendar reflects the diverse array of sustainable produce available from local farms during peak season and season extension periods.” Here’s what just made the harvest calendar for May: Basil, Beans, Blueberries, Broccoli, Garlic-Cured, Okra, Peaches, Field Peas, Plums, Irish Potatoes, Summer Squash and Vidalia Onions. Go to www.georgiaorganics.org then click For Eaters: What’s In Season Now? to view their entire harvest calendar and see what else is in season in May, plus spend lots of time on the site learning more about Georgia Organics. Also look for a copy of the Local Good Guide 2011/2012 at your local supermarkets and restaurants that support Georgia Organics’ initiatives of sustainable and organic food in Georgia. It lists 174 farms, 75 restaurants and caterers, and 40 other businesses that support this movement.

Sweet Vidalia onions from Georgia are in season now

Fresh basil in my own "organic garden" already this year, which means pots on my patio.
